What is Yin and Yang?

Yin and Yang are two qualities of universal  life force or "QI." Yin and yang characterize the duality that exists everywhere in the process of creation. Everything in the Universe, including humankind, is made up of energies, frequencies, and vibrations.

Everything in the Universe has its opposite; this is the Law of Polarity. Not only does everything have an opposite, but it is also equal and opposite. Universal or Creative Law also dictates that everything in nature has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; one cannot exist without the other.  All energy and matter are composed of both polarities in fluctuating measures. Within all Yang, there is Yin. Within all Yin, there is Yang.

  • Yang is represented by a straight line (electricity)that descends from the Heavens/Stars. Yang also represents potential.
  • Yin is represented by a broken line (magnetism) that rises from the earth. Yin also represents the manifested material world.

The interaction of these energies generates the power to create matter.

Understanding Yin and Yang theory must clearly be understood to practice Feng Shui successfully. A Feng Shui Practitioner's goal is to attain equilibrium or balance between energies specific to the use of each space.

Each room in our living environments or workplace is a yin space or yang space. If a room has too much yang, a person may feel agitated, aggressive, or overstimulated. If there is too much yin energy, a person may feel unmotivated, depressed, or tired.

For example, It is not beneficial to have too much yang energy in a bedroom or too much yin energy in a workspace. Typically, the front or busiest side of a building is considered its Yang or Facing side, the quiet side or back of a building is considered the Yin or Sitting side.  A recreational or game room would benefit from a more yang environment, while a Spa would benefit from a yin environment.

In Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture is used to create a harmonious balance of yin and yang within the body. The practice of Feng Shui can be considered Acupuncture for the environment. When yin and yang energies are brought into balance with each other, harmony is achieved.
