As above, so below

In ancient times, temples were built and designed as representations of the Universe, were considered "living organisms," and intended to be intermediaries between spirit and matter or Heaven and earth to guide people on the path to ascension, enlightenment, or illumination. The temples and places of worship of the past were built near water, over underground streams, or strategically built over and along Ley or Dragon lines or telluric currents, which flow in straight lines and connect multiple sacred sites worldwide with the intention of affecting human consciousness

Temples, retreats, Labyrinths, and sacred spaces promote self-reflection and reconnecting to more profound aspects of ourselves. For example, the words "Man Know Thyself" were carved onto the Temple of Delphi in ancient Greece, symbolic of the Temple within, and "We will keep building temples until humans recognize the temple within themselves" was carved on Edfu. Our ancestors, who were very connected to the natural rhythms in the environment, designed these temples by incorporating their knowledge of the Seven Principles of Sacred Design and The Seven Universal Principles.

The Seven Sacred Principles are:

1) Water

Sacred sites, Temples, and Churches built by our ancestors are located above or near water sources and other geophysical anomalies. Water is the source of all life. Approximately two-thirds of the human body is made of water. Without water, our physical body would not function. We have this in common with our planet, which is covered by two-thirds of water. Therefore, we observe "The Law of Correspondence" in this example.

2) Electromagnetics

This Earth energy, known as geomagnetic force , telluric current, Dragon Lines, or Prana is fundamental to temple design because this power influences us and can alter states of consciousness.

3) Sacred Measure

Ancient measurement began with the Egyptians and the Cubit, which is derived from the elbow's length to the fingertips. This measurement can vary depending on a person's age. However, it is incredibly accurate and allowed the Egyptians to calculate our planets' polar radius and its equatorial circumference. The Cubit was used in the construction of the Great Pyramid, symbolic of the four-fold man (Body, Mind, Spirit, and Soul )represented by the base with the Triangle symbolizing humankind's journey towards Heaven. (Enlightenment, Ascension, Illumination)The Triangle also represents the Trinity. Another fascinating fact is that The Great Pyramid is precisely located at the exact intersection of the longest line of latitude and the longest line of longitude at the exact center of our planet's landmass, faces true north with only 3/60 of a degree of error, and aligns with the constellation of Orion. Essentially, one of the purposes of the builders was to design a monument that some experts believe may have served as a temple where individuals were taught deeper truths. Imagine a monument that symbolizes humankind's journey towards ascension located at the exact center of the landmass of our planet. It makes you think.  Churches in Europe were often built over ancient sacred sites, also incorporating these principles into their design. This is another example of The Law of Correspondence, "As above, so below….".

4) Stone

All stones possess a life force, while Crystals are considered the most excellent conductors of energy. Stones at Sacred sites contained large amounts of quartz which has piezoelectric qualities that can hold a charge. Stones were chosen according to their quality to enhance the Temple's energy or building that was going to be constructed.

5) Sacred Geometry

The word Geometry means "Earth Measure." Sacred Geometry distinguishes mathematical principles that explain the intrinsic order of the Universe and the inner workings of the laws of nature. In ancient times, our ancestors observed multiple patterns or geometric shapes repetitive throughout the environment. These observations evolved into a science surmising that form and numbers were fundamental to understanding the workings of creation. Pythagoras, a philosopher and the Father of Numbers, introduced the concept that shapes and numbers were divine.

"The Ancients understood the celestial mechanics behind the nightly display of stars and planets, and the applied this knowledge to the sacred geometry they used in the construction of their temples."

- Stephan  Skinner
We can observe Sacred Geometry in Cosmology, the patterns of crystals, shells, snowflakes, plants, our DNA, art, and architecture, etc.

6) Orientation/ Compass Alignment

Orientation is a particular method that is used to determine direction and location. For example, based on Esoteric Wisdom, temples were aligned according to their purpose, a similar concept to the Chinese practice of Feng Shui. There are four cardinal directions: North, East, South, and West that can also be divided into intercardinal directions of northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. Temples that were aligned in the same direction also shared the same function.

7) The Human Key/Intention

The Physical Body, including the conscious and subconscious mind, is a summation of an energy field that is intertwined with everything that exists. This field of energy is a force-filled with information. For example, when we hold a thought(positive or negative) or intention, vibrations within ourselves begin to emit frequencies that attract what we focus on or desire.

The goal of ancient builders was to create structures that incorporated principles observed in nature and the Heavens( macrocosm), therefore providing humankind the perfect environment(microcosm) on earth, inspiring us as Co-creators; to "go within ourselves" connect with the Divine inside of us and aid us on our journey on the path of ascension.

While most of us do not have the means or options to create something on that scale, we can still incorporate the same principles that will serve the same purpose. Living Temples can be created in the home, on the deck, or in the backyard and can be permanent or temporary. These Sacred Principles can be combined with the practice of Feng Shui and, although on a much smaller scale, create an environment that serves the same purpose of the ancient Master builders.

Home Temples

Home Temples can be created by determining the best location based on orientation and determining the occupants' favorable directions, personal elements, and other pertinent information based on Feng Shui principles, occupant's birthdate, and orienting the entrance towards the direction that will support the intention. It will then be customized to the occupant by incorporating objects that have a special meaning to include sound, light, color, scent, the elements of water, fire, earth, and air. Finally, occupants will participate in its creation in order to make it their own.

It is essential to have space where we can center and renew ourselves in these challenging modern times. Spending time in locations or rooms with personal meaning, we experience uplifted spirits, contentment, and inner tranquility.

Creating little nooks or retreats in our homes and on our property and incorporating items with special meaning remind us to relax and maintain balance in our lives. We can enhance these locations by designing them to be Living Temples utilizing Feng Shui and Sacred Design principles to enhance our unique energy to improve our experience further.

Labyrinths

Labyrinths are used symbolically as walking meditation paths and have been around since ancient times. They are used as tools for spiritual and psychological transformation. They incorporate Sacred Geometry and are thought to amplify right-brain activity. Labyrinths come in different designs and sizes and can be incorporated into the landscape, designed on floors, or made of cloth.
